Councillor Gwyn Sproule is retiring from Village Council after 20 years of service. Today, the Village honoured her by bestowing her “Freedom of the Village”. Gwyn in the first person to be given this honour in 21 years, and of the 6 people this has been given to (so far) Gwyn is the fist woman.
A celebration was held in her honour at the Village Chambers, and was attended by many locals and members of leadership, such as MP Gord Johns, MLA Josie Osbourne, MLA Ronna Rae Leonard. Many talked of her devotion to Cumberland and how important her interest and recording of local history has been.
Sproule was a founding member of the Cumberland Community Forest Society, the Perseverance Creek Streamkeepers, and shared stories in the book “Dancing in Gumboots”, among many other accomplishments.
Freedom of the Village means that Sproule will always have a VIP ticket to any event the Village holds, her picture will be permanently on the wall of the Village Council, and in addition, a marker will be placed at the 00 vector point of the old mine gas pipes (this point is near the BMX track in the Village Park), a pet project of Gwyn’s.
Congratulations Gwyn and thanks for all you do and have done for Cumberland!
