On National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21, 2023) residents were invited to celebrate, witness the blessing and raising of two welcome poles and honour the ancestral lands on which the Village is located.
The event took place from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm within Peace Park and is was hosted by Dawn to Dawn Action on Homelessness Society.
The welcome poles were created for the Ḵwax̱diz’dzas Cumberland Affordable Housing Project and will stand in the park until the completion of the Ḵwax̱diz’dzas project.
DługwayaX̱alis (Karver Everson ) & Aaqwasgem (Junior Henderson ) created these works of monumental beauty that speak to the beauty and resilience of a culture and people that have been the caretakers of the ‘land of plenty’ since time immemorial.
