Cumberland youth and Cumberland Community Schools Society (CCSS) hosted the Reel Youth Film Festival on Friday May 8th at Cumberland Community School. With the assistance of Daryl Robbins CGA (gold sponsor), First Credit Union (silver sponsor), and Shoreline Orthodontics (bronze sponsor), this event raised over $1,300 for the newly opened CCSS Youth Centre in Cumberland.
The Reel Youth Film Festival features a collection of 23 short films from India, Iran, Peru as well as North America that examine what it means to be a young person in today’s world. Two local films made by youth were also included in the tour. Maya Willard Stepan, Kaya Fox, and Tao Werner presented their stop motion film based on “Charlie” by Shane Koyczan and The Short Story Long. Visiting from Duncan, Jerek Postuk presented his mountain bike film shot at Mt Washington. The RYFF is a project of Reel Youth – a Canadian non-profit whose mandate is to empower young voices through the media arts. Major sponsors of the festival include the Vancouver Foundation and Tides Canada Initiatives.
This event raised funds for the newly opened CCSS Youth Centre which provides a safe place for youth to socialize; offering life skills, support services and opportunities for leadership. The Centre is located in the Annex Building within the Cumberland Community School campus. It is open Mondays (2:45-4:15pm), Thursdays (2:45-8:00pm), and Fridays (2:45-8:00pm). Staffed with two qualified youth workers, the CCSS Youth Centre offers a variety of programming throughout the year including table tennis, mountain biking, and employment skills workshops.
The following community businesses also generously supported the festival: Ron Pogue Photography, West Coast Home Theatres, The Eagle, Relay Event Rentals, Riders Pizza, Facet Custom Builders, Long and McQuade, and Cumberland Village Bakery.
