Rec Centre Gymnasium Closed for Renovations in December

The Cumberland Recreation Centre gymnasium will be closed December 5, 2016 to January 4, 2017 for renovations. The programs scheduled to run in the gymnasium will be moved to other Village facilities in order to accommodate this work. The weight room, commercial kitchen and squash courts will remain open.

The original recreation hall was built in the 1930s. In 2015, the Village of Cumberland Recreation Centre hired consultants to inspect the aging facility and make recommendations on building upgrades to increase the life safety and usable space.

One of the top recommendations from the report was to deal with the insulation found in the attic space of the gymnasium. A local company worked with the Village to find an affordable solution. The ceiling of the gymnasium will be sealed off and resurfaced with tongue and groove pine. This will prevent insulation from falling through the cracks of the current structure.

During this closure, the mezzanine railing will be rebuilt to meet code, and the redundant fire exits on the back side of the gymnasium will be sealed off. This work was also a high priority for improving facility safety.
