Tosh Koroscil, who works with Cumberland Lake Wilderness Society (CLWS), got the idea for a concert series at Comox Lake when indoor performance venues shut down. “When the pandemic hit, I felt a void of the community and enjoyment that live music events brought to my life. I saw a lot of the artists in the community struggling to perform” says Koroscil. He presented the idea to CLWS and the Comox Lake Friday Night Concert Series was born.

Tosh has loved getting to watch families enjoy a show while eating ice cream, and seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they emerge from isolation and are able to wave to friends from across a big beach where social distancing can easily be achieved. One of Tosh’s highlights from the series has been watching Fanfare perform with the late summer sun setting on the lake. “It provided a little sense of comfort and normality amidst the chaos of the world these days.”

He also enjoyed HALF/ASIAN with Amy the CODA performing synth pop with interpretive dancing moves incorporating American Sign Language. “Just being able to provide that space for their art to be truly appreciated in person again has been special to me.” Tosh is excited for a post-pandemic reality where friends from near and far can visit each other once again, and he can travel to eat dim sum in Vancouver, but for now the lake concert series is helping keep him and many others connected to the spirit of music and community.

Every Friday of July, August, and September from 7 – 9 pm you can bring your blanket down to the main picnic shelter on the beach by Cumberland Lake Park Campground and enjoy beautiful music by talented Vancouver Island artists. It is free to attend, but performers always appreciate a few coins or a bill for the tip jar!
