New Highway Sign for Cumberland!

New Highway Sign for Cumberland!
These two signs were designed to be featured on the highway at the entrance to Cumberland. Village Council voted to seek public input before making a final selection.

The Inland Island Highway was completed in 2001.  Fourteen years later Cumberland is almost ready to choose a sign to welcome visitors that might otherwise miss us entirely and blast on north towards Campbell River. Here are the two new “Welcome to Cumberland” sign designs that were presented at the Cumberland Village Council Meeting on Monday February, 23, 2015.

In all seriousness it would be great to see us finally have a sign out on the highway! The sign will be mostly viewed by people in vehicles travelling at up to 120km/hour so legibility and bold design choices are key here. What’s your top choice between the two designs presented so far?

Here is a little information from the Meeting Agenda prepared by Village staff explaining some of the design choices made:

Wording & Graphics: The use of the word “legendary” has been used by the music and arts culture to describe the Village in promotional materials and brilliantly portrays the uniqueness of the Village without a fixation on only the past. Legends refer to the stories- which make up the rich and gritty history and future that is Cumberland.
“Explore” is an action word- inviting participation in Cumberland’s famous outdoor opportunities, as well as the epic music and dynamic arts community. “Explore” asks you to come and check out
all Cumberland has to offer. “Welcome” is such an armchair word!
The sign design utilizes a graphic- both from the Village logo and the Parks & Trails sign guidelines, yet is simple and iconic to be understood on a highway sign. The colour is based on the Park &
Trails sign standards, the Village website and has been used for other signage within the Village.
